About Baraboo, WI

Located in southwest Wisconsin, the city of Baraboo is home to 12,000 people and serves as the county seat of Sauk County, WI. In the 1840’s Baraboo and the city of Reedsburg, WI were engaged in an intense battle to see which town would become the county seat. Eventually, Baraboo came out on top and has maintained its status as the county seat to this very day.

Aside from its fight to become the county seat, Baraboo is also famous for being the former headquarters for several of the country’s most famous circuses. At one time, the city even went by the nickname, “Circus City”. Baraboo’s ties to the circus can still be seen in the form of the one-hundred-year-old A1. Ringling Theatre and The Circus World Museum. Both of these entities showcase the history of the circus and, in the case of The Circus World Museum, host the Great Circus Parade through downtown Baraboo.

But it’s not just about the circus in Baraboo. The Mid-Continent Railway Museum is a great place for those interested in trains, specifically the “Golden Age of Railroading” from the late 1800s to the early 1920s. The museum features exhibits as well as fully restored trains. You can even ride in a diesel locomotive. History buffs will also enjoy the Sauk County Historical Society’s History Center, which houses a museum, historical archives, and a 1902 Tudor Revival mansion.
