The town of New Richmond, Wisconsin was established in 1857, making it nearly 160 years old. Originally known simply as Richmond, the city lost a dispute with another Wisconsin town also named Richmond. As a result, the word “New” was added in front of Richmond to create the city’s current name.
By most accounts, this small town of 8,400 would be considered a sleepy village without many attractions or things to do, but this would not be true in the case of New Richmond. For example, taking place in the dead of winter, the Cabin Fever Classic encourages residents to team up and step out for a traveling indoor golf tournament that takes place in nine area bars. Another popular event in New Richmond is the Heritage Days Festival in September. This event includes pony rides, a petting zoo, food vendors, and a craft sale.
For the more adventurous, outdoorsy types, nearby Willow River State Park has 3,000 acres of prairie land, forests, and waterfalls with campground space, a beach, a boat launch, and picnic areas centered on Little Falls Lake. In the summer, canoes can be rented from Friends of Willow Rivers State Park.
