About Beloit, WI

The city of Beloit, Wisconsin, is located just north of the Illinois state line along the Rock River and Interstate 90. Because of its unique location directly along Wisconsin’s southernmost boundary, it is also known as the “Gateway to Wisconsin”. Beloit is also home to 37,110 residents and Beloit College, the oldest college in the state of Wisconsin.

The area around modern-day Beloit was originally settled by Native Americans of the Ho-Chunk tribe. Sometime during the 1820s, fur trader Joseph Thiebault settled alongside the Ho-Chunk and established a trading outpost in the area. In 1836, Caleb Blodgett, a settler from New England, purchased the land settled by Mr. Thiebault. It was this land that would ultimately become the city of Beloit, Wisconsin. Just a decade later, the construction of Beloit College began and Beloit was well on its way to becoming a permanent settlement.

Beloit is a one-of-a-kind destination. The city has something for everyone all year round from sports enthusiasts to music and history buffs. The Festival on the Rock, Beloit’s premier three-day arts, music, and food festival, is held along the Rock River. If shopping is your hobby, Beloit is the perfect place to find unique, vintage treasures in the numerous antique shops around town. Beloit is also home to the largest privately-held collection of angels at the Angel Museum which includes Oprah Winfrey’s collection of 571 black angels that she donated to the museum. Finally, Beloit is home to the Snappers, a minor league affiliate of the Oakland A’s and the Beloit College Buccaneers, who field teams in over fourteen different sports.
