In its early days, the town of Platteville was a small trading and farming outpost in southeastern Wisconsin. Then a period of rapid growth began for the city in the 1820s due to the discovery of lead in the surrounding area. From that point on, Platteville quickly became known as a mining center. Aside from lead, other minerals such as zinc and galena were also mined in the area. During the mid-1800s, Platteville became home to two colleges, a teachers’ college and a college of mining. These two schools eventually merged to become the city’s largest institution, the University of Wisconsin - Platteville.
For those who wish to explore Platteville’s history of mining, there is the Mining Museum, which celebrates the city’s mining heritage. The museum also offers tours into one of the city’s old mines. Adjacent to the Mining Museum is the Rollo Jamison Museum, which exhibits collections and mementos of Platteville’s past.
