Bay City, Texas is a small community of 18,500 situated about 100 miles south of Houston, Texas in Matagorda County, TX. It is rumored that the city’s founders established the town with the intent that it would one day serve as the county seat of Matagorda County even before the county itself was officially created. Bay City’s first newspaper, the Bay City Breeze, began production even before the first buildings were constructed in the town. Bay City also happens to lie directly in the path of the migration routes of several bird species. Because of this chance occurrence, the city is a destination for bird watchers. Many of these bird enthusiasts head over to the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center which offers great vantage points for bird watching as well as showcasing the wildlife and natural features of the surrounding area. The city is also home to its annual Rice Festival, which features such things as carnival rides, cash bingo, a rice dish competition, and a Punt, Pass & Kick competition.
