In 1857, the State of Texas selected the settlement of Brownwood to be the county seat of Brown County. A few years later, a dispute over land and water rights jeopardized Brownwood’s status as the county seat and even its existence as a city. Eventually, cooler heads prevailed and an agreement was made for the entire town of Brownwood, Texas to relocate to the western side of Pecan Bayou, where it exists to this very day.

As with so many small communities in west Texas, the area that would become Brownwood was initially settled by farmers and ranchers with the community’s economy centered around this agricultural base. When the railroads came through in the late 1800’s, Brownwood became the county’s major trading center for agricultural products. The city saw two more boosts to its economy when oil was discovered nearby and during World War Two when the US government opened Camp Bowie, an Army training base, in the city. Camp Bowie was shut down in 1946 and the local economy is now a mix of both agriculture and manufacturing. Brownwood is also the home of Howard Payne University and has an estimated population of nearly 20,000 residents.
