The city of College Station, Texas can literally trace its beginnings and existence to two things, the Houston and Central Texas Railway and Texas A&M University. Sometime in the middle of the 19th century, around 1860, the Houston and Central Texas Railroad was laid down across East Central Texas. About a decade later, the Texas legislature approved the creation of the State’s first public university with its location to be situated along the Houston and Central Texas railroad within Brazos County. This site of the new land grant university would become known as College Station, Texas.

Over the years, as Texas A&M grew into a world-class academic and research institution of higher learning, the area around the school also became known for its academic prowess. In fact, in 2006, Money Magazine gave College Station the designation of the most educated city in Texas and the 11th most educated city in the entire country. College Station also benefits greatly from Texas A&M economically. Aside from the thousands of students and faculty that come and go throughout the year, the university is also the recipient of millions of dollars in research grants which eventually trickle over to the local economy.
