About Gun Barrel City, TX
Gun Barrel City, Texas was incorporated on May 26, 1969, making it one of the youngest incorporated cities in Texas. The name of the city was derived from Texas State Highway 198 which runs through the center of town. In its early days, Highway 198 was locally known as Gun Barrel Lane. In the 1920s and 1930s, outlaws such as Bonnie and Clyde frequented the Gun Barrel City area, which only enhanced the area’s reputation as being lawless.
In recent years, Gun Barrel City has grown into a destination point for people wanting to explore Cedar Creek Reservoir. The town sits along the eastern shore of Cedar Creek Reservoir making it a perfect site for anyone wishing to enjoy the lake. Not only is Cedar Creek Texas’ fourth largest lake, it is known for its wonderful fishing. With the growth in popularity of Cedar Creek Reservoir, there has been a residential boom in the area with a stream of wealthy retirees moving to the city and building homes along the shoreline.
Every year, Gun Barrel City has annual events for residents and visitors to enjoy. The city presents July Fest and Concert in the Park on the first weekend of July each year. The event features arts and crafts, food vendors, a concert, and a fireworks display. The month of October is time for the city’s Fall Fest, which features lawn mower races, a petting zoo, live music and a BBQ brisket cook-off. In December, the city hosts a Christmas Festival and a sizeable parade made up of more than 60 floats. At the end of the evening’s festivities, there’s fireworks and Christmas music.
