About Harker Heights, TX

In 1950, the United State government constructed Fort Hood in Bell County, Texas and designated the installation as a permanent military facility. As a result, more and more non-military personnel came to the area and several towns began to pop up around the Fort in order to house this new civilian population. One of the towns that came about from Fort Hood’s construction was the city of Harker Heights, TX.

In the beginning, Harker Heights started out as a hog farm. The owners of the hog farm noticed the increasing amount of people moving into the area due to the presence of the Fort and realized they could make a handsome profit by selling off pieces of their farmland. Over time, the farmers sold nearly 700 tracts of land. These tracts were developed into homes which turned into a neighborhood and then into a small town. In 1960, the people in this area officially incorporated themselves into a city and named it Harker Heights in memory of one of the original hog farmers. Currently, Harker Heights has about 27,000 residents and sits on just under 13 square miles of land.
