In 1876, the Missouri-Pacific Railroad was being constructed through the area now occupied by present-day New Boston, Texas. During that time, the residents of a town called Boston, TX, located four miles south of the railroad, noticed that their city was too far away from the railroad. Immediately, the townspeople of Boston set about to rectify the situation and called for meetings with the railroad company. They eventually negotiated a plan to secure a train depot and tracts of land by the railroad. When the plan was approved, the people of Boston, TX effectively relocated their town to the railroad by creating an entirely new city along the railroad that they named “New Boston”.
The city of New Boston, Texas now covers an area of 3.5 square miles which includes the old city of Boston, TX that the locals affectionately call “Old Boston”. New Boston is considered to be the westernmost suburb of the Texarkana Metropolitan area. It is located about 25 miles west of Texarkana along Interstate 30 with a population of just over 4,500.
