Located about 35 miles northeast of San Antonio, TX along Interstate 35, the city of New Braunfels is home to one of the largest German-American communities in Texas. The city was established in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels who led a large contingency of German colonists into Texas. Once the settlement was established along the Guadalupe River near the Comal Springs, the Prince named the surrounding land after his hometown of Braunfels, Germany which means “brown rock.”
