When Texas officials were organizing Erath County in 1856, they needed a town to serve as the county seat. It was this time when a local landowner, John M. Stephen, stepped in and donated the land that would be used for the new town. To commemorate Mr. Stephen’s generous donation, the founders decided to name the town Stephenville. In its early days, Stephenville, Texas served as an agricultural center and suffered constant raids from nearby Native American tribes. It wasn’t until 1889, with the coming of the first railroad, that Stephenville really began to grow and expand. Within a decade of the railroads coming to town, Stephenville’s economy had changed from agriculture to manufacturing.

Today, the city known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World” is a college town. Stephenville is home to Tarleton State University, one of the fastest growing universities in the State of Texas. In 2012, the school had an enrollment of nearly 10,500 students. For a town of 17,000 residents, it is not surprising that Tarleton State is Stephenville’s largest employer and the centerpiece of its economic and cultural life.
