In 1886, the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe railroad was built through Collin County, Texas. One of the communities this new railroad passed by was the town of Nickelville, TX. Businesses in Nickelville noticed that the railroad was generating a boost in the local economy. The only issue that the town faced was the fact that it was still a good mile away from the railway, which back in the 1800s, was a significant distance when moving goods and products. So in order to take better advantage of the commerce created by the railroad, Nickelville decided to physically relocate all of its businesses along the railroad. After the relocation, residents decided that the town needed a new name to commemorate the move and its new location. So in 1887, Nickelville, TX changed its name and became the incorporated city of Wylie, Texas.
Wylie is now one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the Dallas, Fort Worth metropolitan area. With a little over 41,000 people living in the city, Wylie has been steadily growing in size ever since its incorporation. It was even one of the few cities with an agriculture-centered economy to increase in population during the Great Depression. Wylie residents enjoy a low cost of living, a low unemployment rate, and have, on average, a higher median household income level than the rest of the country. With so many positives to living in Wylie, it’s not very surprising that it has increased in population by over 150% since 2000.
